New England cottontail

Sylvilagus transitionalis

Unlike the more common eastern cottontail (S. floridanus), New England cottontails are habitat specialists; they require dense, tangled thickets to survive.

New England cottontails have been declining throughout their native range due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the introduction of eastern cottontails, and a variety of other possible factors.
